EQUATOR aims to provide an improved appraisal of the budget and role of emissions of key compounds contributing to air quality degradation and climate change in the tropical regions.

The quantification of emissions from satellite data in tropical regions, a largely understudied but critical component of the Earth system. Space-based emission datasets in the Tropics are currently lacking. EQUATOR will lead to openly accessible space-based emission datasets.

A step-by-step approach will be adopted, aiming to tackle the several issues and uncertainties in the derivation of BVOC emissions from satellites.

EQUATOR starts on December 15th, 2020 for a duration of 4 years. It is funded by the BRAIN-be 2.0 (Belgian Research Action through Interdisciplinary Networks) though the Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO).
